Putting green

The lawn was as short as a putting green, but there weren’t any bushes or flowers and the patio chairs were all pushed in under the table. Uncle Gary, Aunt Jenny, and Nora didn’t get out much.

The backyards on either side of Uncle Gary’s looked basically the same, and the backyards on the other side of those did, too. They were all separated by chain-link fences. But behind all the yards was a long, tall mound made of dirt and rocks and tree roots. It made me feel like we were in one of those trenches they dug back when they were fighting World War I. On the other side of it was a forest.

I put my ball down on the grass. Boy, was it hot. Even my hair felt hot. I dribbled back and forth across the yard a few times, cutting left and spinning right like I was moving through a crowd of defenders, but after only a few minutes, I felt sweaty and bored. Playing alone just wasn’t the same as playing with friends.

Although one of the EU’s least expensive capitals, Lisbon was once one of the continent’s wealthiest, controlling a maritime empire that stretched from Brazil to Macau. The iconic Torre de Belém, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and dramatic Moorish castle survive from these times, though many other buildings were destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755. Today, much of the historic centre – the Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto – dates from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The biggest attraction in these quarters is the street life: nothing beats watching the city’s comings and goings from a pavement café over a powerful bica coffee or Portuguese beer.

If you’re fit enough to negotiate its hills, Lisbon is a great place to explore on foot: get off the beaten track and you’ll find atmospheric neighbourhoods sheltering aromatic pastelarias (patisseries), traditional shops, and shuttered houses faced with beautiful azulejo tiles. Getting around by public transport can be fun in itself, whether you’re cranking uphill on one of the city’s ancient trams, riding a ferry across the Rio Tejo, or speeding across town on the metro, whose stations are decorated with adventurous contemporary art.

“Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa

“This dance ain’t for everybody / Only the sexy people.” With this paraphrasing of Prince protégés The Time, Salt-N-Pepa set the tone for their breakthrough hit: a slice of pop-rap heaven, boasting raunchy riffs and sassy lyrics—“Can’t you hear the music’s pumpin’ hard, like I wish you would?” “We was,” admitted Cheryl “Salt” James, “a little raw back in the day.”

The addictive hook and spunky rapping—including a quote from The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” released in 1964—made it a dance floor perennial. “The music,” enthused People, “more melodic and complex than most rap, gives the record an incredible twist.”

“Push It” was originally the flipside to “Tramp.” “We recorded it in [rapper] Fresh Gordon’s bathroom,” Salt told Essence. “We needed something quick for the B-side because we wanted to put out the single the next day.” Californian DJ Cameron Paul remixed it and sent his version to Next Plateau Records. That was released as a single and retrospectively added to Salt-N-Pepa’s debut, Hot, Cool & Vicious (1987). It reappeared on A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988). A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988) 中。

Voted into Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time, it has been sampled by various artists. 2 Many DJ’s memorably mixed it with “No Fun” by The Stooges on their mashup masterpiece As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt 2 (2002). As Heard on Radio Soulwax pt 2 (2002) 中將它與 The Stooges No Fun”混合在一起,令人難忘。

At a Detroit show in 2008, Salt-N-Pepa claimed that the song wasn’t about sex, but about dancing. Always passionate about feminist and social issues, they dedicated it to single mothers, lower taxes, and the Obamas. “We are,” declared Salt, “pushing it for change in America with Barack and Michelle Obama.”
